can easily shift them with concrete still attached.
Roofing rafters will need replacing but everything else is OK.

---- @ Dads doing terratile/earthcrete floor

Feb 24- Feb 26 ( Fri-Sun)
Dad emptied out his glasshouse shed and put boxing up for
concreting floor. Get Will to dump half tractor bucket each of
silt and clay in driveway, Get cement mixer setup.
Lay plastic as vapor barrier and cut and place bamboo lengths on that
for insulation.
one span parallel to screed boards one at right angles - find that
shorter lengths at right angles seems to work better.

Make earthcrete/terratile/stabilised earth mix of silt+clay+cement for
2x4m spans of flooring.
use 4:4:1 (silt:clay:cement) mix for less travelled span
2:2:1 for other span.
Use about 2 1/2 bags cement for about 0.8 cu m.
Comes out thick and sticky like plaster - harder to work/screed than concrete
and needs lotta water to mix and keep plastic.
End up manually smoothing rather than screeding but gives nice smooth
surface. Seems to be drying OK but slower than concrete - surface
still a bit soft (weaker mix) 24 hours after layed and smoothed..
Back to House by midday in time to pickup Sho from airport.

Mon Feb 27
Put rest of rafters on carport roof. Add corner braces to stiffen.
Layout roofing iron and measure up for roof. Start nailing iron on

(70mm drop over 9m - probably overkill).
Fill in broken soffitt on far side of garage.
Get Eb to put corrugated iron siding around garage and dad putting in
rest of spouting brackets while I take Dads brushcutter to rest of barberry
hedge and long grass on hedge side of house.
( note to self - must get brushcutter)

(testing shows water flows downhill in desired direction)
Install kitchen rangehood in afternoon.
Peter and Darryl back in afternoon to pickup last of their stuff and
take away their pile of griptread ( damn!)
Dad left brushcutter so cut long grass by gate (finding a fence post
and some offcuts in process) and decapitate all the docks I can find
in the paddock - in the process of doing that find a pristine offal
hole (complete with concrete cap and lid), some pallets and a 5 gallon
bucket presumably used as a honey bucket.

Shonagh tested that second phone line now working. Thank You Telecom

Sat Feb 18
Setup wood storage pallets on far side of garage. Find handle for
shonaghs gardening wagon and install that.
Move lumber from house from inside garage into neat pile on pallets.

Flooring and camping

PolyUrethane wood floors ( 3 coats / 4 on travelled areas, sanding between coats)
Old Kitchen Bench units out of house
Setup garage floor

Wed Feb 1
Girls sanding floors (manually). Move stove and use sander on floor behind and some floor patches. Put 3 polyU coats on that and replace stove.
Girls polyU floor when sanding done - run out of polyU halfway up hall
(4 4L tins). Sho bring back 6 more tins but finish up using only about
half a tin.
Sand old scorch marks off hall fireplace surround.
Girls undercoat shos benches out on porch.
Sand MBR skirting after kait wash + go over with meths.
Seal pantry floor and gloop some more holes.
Better to do floor glooping after a coat (at least) of polyU so gloop not
inhibit polyU coating.

Thurs Feb 2
Sand and PolyU hall floor( jamie) and kitchen and doorways off hall - xtra coat on high traffic areas.
Pete and Bob move benches/pantry off porch into garage.
Coopers man by to deliver (small) load of wood stripper system we bought and
show us how to use it.
Cleaning out garage. Move benches and pantry to back wall and put them both up on
blocks. Level out dirt floor (RHS).
Drag sheets of corrugated iron over to garage and layout next to garage wall.

January - Push to handoff

Jan 4-7 - rennovate wood ceilings
Cleanup water stains on ceilings and reoil ceiling panelling
and battens.
Meths + steel wool on Lounge + DR ceiling clears up water damage
(lighter colouring) very nicely - probably just shellaced so meths is spreading old shellac around and evening out color.
Start on office (ceiling was varnished so have to scrape down first - this is a bastard job from hell)

Finish office ceiling scraping, sand (roughly) and oil (meths, boiled linseed oil + turpentine) to bring color back out and remove water stains - works a treat.
Start on spare room - varnish comes off much easier (large strips),
more water came through in here.

Complete spare rm ceiling, sand and oil.
Start on craft rm - varnish not come off v easily but finish (not
much water came through here - just enough to screw up the color without loosening the varnish - pox!). Looks very good once oiled.
Redo/Cleanup patches in LR+DR ceiling.
Electrician in to redo wiring (fm single phase to 2 phase).

Jan 8 Sun
Varnish L+DR architraves, remove some nails from sarking wall

Jan 9-13
Floor tightening and last painting of exterior sections.
Electricity on
Jack up and put piles under garage

Climb under house and put cleats across loose+bowed floorboards in
MBR+Lounge doorways, MBR.
Electrician put in House switches and plugs and wire all up.
Builders gang doing architraves and skirting bds.
Bob fixup gap in Lounge ceiling - just lever/cut out old
nails/brads lever into place and rebrad.

Paint outside over Bobs fixups of Lounge exterior trim and MBR weatherbds
Electricians doing shed wiring - lights and plugs.
Paint over trim and architraves around porch wdw + door after Darryl put them up.

Find wood lengths for kitchen overhang.
Mark up old (standalone) pantry for cutting down so can get it out out the front door.
Spade+scraper on MBR floor to see how much of stuck lino can remove - quite a lot - comes off relatively easily - Peter pointed out this is a waste of effort - floor sander will remove it a treat

Dad came up for a day- spray weeds in yard. Looked at vinyl flooring choices with sho.
Electricity on in house - disconnect shed wiring so can pile shed (so no pump/water)

Glooping gaps, oil+CRC sash wdw pulleys+ inside door mechanisms
Bob+Peter arrive, setup jacks in garageshed and jack it up about 3/4 meter.
Between Me, Bob and Peter dig 3 shed pile holes anchor piles 450x450x900mm deep (a f. big hole). Other piles are non anchor 350x350x450 deep - still serious overkill.

Sho get quotes for floor sanding ~3k the lot, cheapest $900 sand and fill so prob go with that.

Garage Piling:
Digging anchor pile holes (lotsa dirt) - I did 2, Bob did 2 (faster than me). V hard getting dirt out of bottom of deep ones.

Bldg Inspector came and passed the holes. (!)

Coopers wood restoration system guy came and gave us a demo. Very
impressive but exorbitantly expensive ( $150/L ~$6k for materials for
all of house) so we're not going to do that.

Put in piles, concrete on bottom, then pile centered in hole then concrete surround carefully placed to keep pile plumb and centered.
Bob aligning piles, Peter mixing concrete me on barrow.
Finished 7.30 (v tired)

Buiding code demands 225mm from base to top of piles - this leaves shed somewhat higher than needed/desired (sigh!)

Jan 14 Sat
Purchasing (power) tools, electric drill, belt sander, orbital and finishing (finger) sanders ( about $250 the lot). Small vacuum cleaner (Warehouse) for doing ceiling space. garden hosing, other stuff

Jan 15. Sun Get camping gear out of lockup. Showoff house to Shos cousin (Kelly) and his girlfnd.

Jan 16-20 Garage pile completion
Cut and attach garage Bearers
Lower and straighten garage
attach garage to piles
Remove garage bracing
Final Inspection

Replace rotted floorplates in corners of garage.
Cut piles to height (skilsaw 3 sides and handsaw to finish).
Cut floor plate bearers to length, lap joint ends. Not enough wood to do back wall.
Attach outside water hoses.
Start vacuum dirt and crap out of house ceiling space - do about 1/3 of one half.
Jamie (joiner) cut out hole in end hall for stained glass.

Finish doing back wall bearers (w bob) since more wood arrived. Finish cutting bearers (bob pulled off to do something with house movers).
Carriage bolt ends of bearers to batten plate.
Cut off front of old pantry so can remove it out door
Silicon round shower and end of laundry.
Clean old screen remnants from bathrm wdw
Jamie (joiner) put in stained glass wdw and frame laundry opening

Paint outside of bathrm wdw, putty up gaps around glass. gloop/seal top of shower.
Plaster back porch ceiling edges and other gaps.
Cleanup kitchen wdw with triangle scraper and meths.
Test out rimu dap (gap filer) on brad holes in office door and DR openings (works a treat)
Movers turn up and lower garage then bugger off again - didnt straighten it back on the piles.
More vacuuming in ceiling - slow cos hose keeps getting blocked w old fiberglass insulation
Jamie(joiner) working on edging and skirting bds in bathrm + bedrm

Thur Jan 19
Fiddling in roof - cut gap for wires and gloop round laundry vent
Peter + Darryl use Digger to straighten shed - scary application of big machinery.
Paint wood strip for flashing over gap in front gable.
Put 2 Z nails on each pile all round garage. Attach carriage bolts on back bearer.
House inspector check house in afternoon - final inspection.
House pass OK but still need gas and electrical certs fm tradesmen.
Garage needs plate attachments and guttering but pile inspection
passed.
Find drill and sockets and put stainless steel plates on anchor piles (3 screws each side). Plate holes too small for screws so punch to fit and augment with lotta flathead nails and careful appliaction of cursewords.

Fri Jan 20
Help Sam remove bracing from inside of garage.
Paint wood strip for gap fill. Pickup nails. Gloop front gable flashing after Jamie put it up
Leave ~4.00 pack car and off to Opunake

Jan 21-24 Camping at Opunake beach campgrounds

Jan 25 Back to N.P.

Jamie fill in holes in MBR floor, skirting and scotia in MBR wardrobe.
Cleanout sawdust from rooms

Thurs Jan 26
Move rest of big stuff out onto porch.
Floor sanders arrive help move benches and wood.
Take off front door to get pantry out onto porch.
Floor sanders doing their stuff - floor sands up nice back to white and pink wood. They fill (major) gaps with colorised jointing compound.
Gloop bathrm skirting, Varnish skirtingboard and trim in bathrm and laundry.
Undercoat behind bath and touchups on walls.
Plugging floor holes in laundry

Fri Jan 27
Floor sanders doing 2nd and 3rd passes through house.
Mix paper strips in water for gap plugging as paper mache
Gloop floor holes in ensuite and plaster holes in gib bd there as well.

compliance doc delivery to lawyers office.

Tues Jan 31 Final House Purchase done
Setup for polyurethane floors (sho got 4x4L tins yesterday, Carbothane low odour, water based)
Dad by to check out floor. I start polyU first coat at shos craftrm - speed brush on pole, work out and onto rest of floors.
Jamie +Kait arrive ~10.30. Get them doing skirting bds.
Keep on with floor - done about 1.00.
Get girls to run steel wool on dry floors (about 30 mins to dry)
Me and Dad work on fixup garage doors so roll up and down then working on dining room exterior sash window ( broken sash cord).
Girls laying on 2nd polyU coat.
Champagne with dinner - now we are house owners.

Work round Xmas

Dec24 (Sat)
Spend 4 hours cleaning accumulated debris out of house:
4 bags dust and small bits, coupla other bags and boxes of larger debris (polystyrene packing from oven, joint compound boxes, etc). Looks much better

Dec 25th Xmas Day - nothing done on house.

Dec 26th Mon
Varnish all the new fitted rimu skirting bds, architraves and exposed new wood in Dining room and kitchen hall openings. One coat (matt) about 15% thinned with turps. Wood looks really good.

Tues-Thurs
With Dad + Eb And Jamie and Kaits help put interior undercoat/sealer through all the interior walls.
Do the back Porch/Toilet, Bathroom and all the Bedrooms Tues.
Bedrooms were done fast so its a bit uneven.
Found that the gibstoppers didnt stop around the windows in the bedrooms so leave the edges unpainted pending that being fixed.
Lounge+Dining room and part of Hall Wed - nice clean even job.
Finish Hall, Linen cupboard (Dad calls it the boiler room), Hall, porch and bathroom and Laundry ceilings and do Kitchen Thursday.
Finish by touching up uneven coverage in bedrooms.

Anticipated about 4 buckets (40L) paint - used just under 6 in end - 3 on first day. Best result (for me) seems to be using roller on a pole and working round room. Apply first coat to seal/cover, let dry(mostly) then a cover coat to even it up. Others have slightly different approached none of which give an even a job as my way.

We put a coat on the laundry (painted) panelling and back room ceilings which lightened/cleaned them up a lot.

Looks really good with just white and rimu trim. Havent been able to persuade shonagh we should leave it like that.

Taking new year off to go up to Rotorua.

Friday, December 23, 2005

waiting for stoppers.

Mon Dec 19 to Fri Dec 23

Put colored plastic in Powerline ditch.
Darryl fill ditch in with digger after phone guy laid phone line.

Crawl around under house removing all stored stuff and rubbish while Darryl + Pete finishing house base boards. Make piles of stuff to keep and put some in shed. Pile up rubbish for discard later. Darryl put doors on baseboards for under house access.

Fixup bent floor board by jacking up (car jack) from underneath and cleating it in place. Crawl all over underneath of house andfill up gaps around pipes and old pipe holes in laundry and bathroom.

Nail up face boards around back porch door and where house was cut for moving. Gloop up resulting gaps in weatherboard and paint over.

Plumbers by to finish spouting and plumb waste water line from shower. As final test they hookup generator to pump and test all taps and water entry and exit fixtures.
Roofer by to put flashing on verandah.

Find leak over kitchen window so gloop that up.
Mother stuck in mud by drive where parked it in the morning -- cant drive out so get pickup from sho.

Gib stoppers by for a few hours early in week. Finish stopping, sand walls then put final coating on and take off. Leave a hell of a mess on parts they werent supposed to be plastering (ceiling and floors).Looks like a flock of seagulls have been nesting in the house.

Electrician come take a look at the wiring and physically connect the line from the pole to the fuse box.
